Stallsmith brings three decades of communications experience to her job. She began her career at The Lynchburg News & Daily Advance in Virginia, following local politics and education. She worked at the Richmond Times-Dispatch for nearly 20 years, first as a state bureau reporter and then covering state politics and government, including the governor’s office, the General Assembly and campaign finance. Before joining the Wilder School in 2015, she worked in the Corporate Communications office at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
Stallsmith has won 95 national and state awards for communications and writing, including from the Richmond chapter of the Public Relations Society of America; the National Federation of Press Women; the Virginia Press Association; Virginia Professional Communicators; and the National Center for Farmworker Health. She was named Virginia Press Women's Communicator of Achievement, the group's highest honor, in 2009 and received VPW's Distinguished Service Award in 2007. She is a past president of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association and Virginia Press Women (now Virginia Professional Communicators).
