India Chair in Democracy and Civil Society

Rao with India Chair The Wilder School’s India Chair in Democracy and Civil Society hosts experts on India’s culture, history and vibrancy. These experts share their knowledge about one of the United States’ key global partners.

India, which gained independence in 1947, shares common values including the rule of law, respect for diversity and democratic governance.


The India Chair also hosts the annual Ranjit Sen Memorial Lecture, which allows the VCU community and the public to learn more about India, the world’s largest democracy and second most populous country.

Past speakers have included:

  • Richard R. Verma, the U.S. ambassador to India
  • Rajmohan Gandhi, a historian, biographer and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi
